Filey's heritage is very much steeped in fishing. For most of its history it was a fishing village, and ecclesiastical records show that as early even as the 12th Century, local men were fishing as far away as Whitby and Grimsby.
Filey is a popular spot for sea angling both from the Brigg (for the more serious fishing enthusiast) and from boats in the bay. The Filey Brigg Angling Society runs its popular annual Fishing Festival during the first week in September, which attracts anglers from all over the world.
